Fela!, conceived, choreographed and directed by Tony Award-winning Spring Awakening choreographer Bill T. Jones, will play Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre, according to The New York Times. The Lortel Award-winning show, which previously played off-Broadway at 37 Arts Theatre, will begin performances on Broadway on October 19 and open on November 23.
The musical, featuring a book by Jim Lewis and arrangements by Aaron Johnson and Antibalas, is based on the life and music of iconic Nigerian composer and musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti. It explores Kuti's controversial life as an artist, political activist and revolutionary musician as well as his pioneering blend of jazz, funk and traditional African rhythms that launched the Afrobeat community.
The Fela! cast will be led by Lortel and Obie winner Sahr Ngaujah in the title role. The creative team includes scenic and costume design by Marina Draghici, lighting design by Rob Wierzel, sound design by Rob Kaplowitz and projections by Peter Negrini.
